The Carnelian Fox

Why did I start reading it?

I like pokemon

What is it?

In a world where the pokemon go hype never left scientists created IRL pokemon and and IRL way to play. Years later the Gems(pokemon) are all over the world and our protag Sam is about to stat her adventure.

What are the characters like?

I wouldn't say I fell in love with any of them but I did enjoy them. They were well written and even if I was rooting for the Gems more than the people.

Anyone particularly cool?

Well, all the Gems. They are all such good boys and girls and I want to hug most of them. I say most because some would probably hurt. There was this rock hedgehog at one point, though I would pat him and tell him he is also a cutie.

What's the bad news?

I feel like the main plot struggled a bit, because this is a first book it focused on introducing us to the world so the things happening in the shadows, the main plot of the world, seemed clashed a little with the more pokemoney aspects like gym battles and tournaments.

And the good news?

Frick this book was good. As much as the pokemomey aspects and main world stuff clashed a little (probably on purpose) they were both great. I read this book so quick because i just wanted to know more!

Naming of the Gems in this book if genius. It's kept as simple as possible. Out main Gem we see is a flame fox, self explanatory. That way the author was able to use a large variety of so many different animals and elemental combinations and not bog us down with too much description or make us remember 150 names. The design of the game system is overall great and there was so much more to it than pokemon has ever had and I want a real game of this like yesterday.

It's also fun to have this chance to have a look at a pokemon-like world and not have nintendo forcing us to gloss over the whole big scary monsters that could crush us if they wanted to. It was interesting to read something that added a dose of reality to a world like that.

Would you recommend?

Yes! I really enjoyed this book and look forward to it's next instalment.
